Daily Sun learnt that Mr. Sunday Ibe, a businessman who hails from Umuezeogu, Eziani Ihiala in Ihiala council of Anambra State, was not aware that his only child and daughter, Nkechi, a two-year-old, was at the back of his Camry car. According to the eyewitness, Ibe had handed over his daughter to the house-help to take her into his apartment not knowing that the maid had allowed the little girl to stray out of the house and had crept at the back of the car and as result was crushed to death while reversing his car. He said, “The man did not know that the girl was at the back of the motor. It was with speed that he moved the motor backwards only for people around to raise alarm that he had killed the little baby”. The eyewitness, who did not want his name mentioned, s

Nigeria running a bastardised federalism – Oyegun

Image
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said on Wednesday that Nigeria is practicing a bastardized federal system of government that is tilted more toward a unitary system. He said if the country must practice federalism, it has to be a true federalism. Oyegun, who spoke at a public presentation of APC committee report on true federalism, said true federalism entails devolution of power to the federating units, while states are allowed to determine the nature of local government they want. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party spent about N150 million to fund the activities of the committee on True federalism. He, however, added that the money came from the party coffers and not from the government. The APC Chairman said that past national conferences were flamboyantly organised and ended up without any positive contribution to the debate on true federalism. He said the APC has gone beyond such

Student killed in school hostel in Sokoto

One student was confirmed killed on Wednesday when fire gutted a student hostel at Sultan Tambari Secondary School, Illela, Sokoto State, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports. Sources from the school indicated that the deceased, 17-year-old Isma’ila Garba, was among the 200 students in the hostel when the fire started. “The deceased actually escaped unhurt when the fire started, but went back to retrieve some belongings and could not return,” Malam Nura Bello, information officer of the Sokoto education ministry, told NAN. He described the incident as “very shocking”, adding that Garba, who hailed from Ambarura village in Illela Local Government Area, had been buried at Kilgori. Bello said that students who sustained injuries had been taken to the hospital. A NAN correspondent, who visited the school, reports that the entire structure was razed down by the fire which lasted for “several hours”. Bello, however, told NAN that the cause of the fire had not been ascertained. “The c

APC’s report on restructuring a ruse – PDP

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the report of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on restructuring, describing it as a ruse and fresh attempt to beguile Nigerians with another round of lies, empty proposals and hollow promises ahead of the 2019 elections. Saying that it is a recast of APC’s deceptive stunts in the run up to the 2015 general elections, the PDP also said the report is another calculated ploy by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to divert public attention from the woes of a worsening economy, unrelenting killings, corruption and the endless litany of afflictions occasioned by ruling party’s dysfunctional governance. In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said it amounted to outright depravity that the same APC leaders who at assumption of office, rejected restructuring would now suddenly turn around to pose as fathers of a restructured Nigeria simply because the 2019 general elec

Oyinlola, Duke, others unveil Coalition for Nigeria Movement

Image
A new political group, Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), was on Wednesday unveiled in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the move may not be unconnected to the call by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s charge on the need for a Coalition for Nigeria. The Acting Chairman of CNM, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who spoke at the unveiling, described the coalition as a movement to salvage Nigeria. Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun State, said that CNM remains a movement and not a political party unless members agree to transform it into a party. He said that the movement came into being in response to Obasanjo’s call for the emergence of a Coalition to help rescue the country from bad administration. Oyinlola was also the former Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said that the movement would provide equal platform for all Nigerians, especially women and youths. The former governor added that

Ebonyi PDP rejects Obasanjo’s coalition

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ebonyi state chapter has rejected the call for a coalition oof opposition parties for Nigeria by former President Olusajun Obasanjo to oust the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC. The chairman of the party in the state, Barr. Onyekachi Nwebonyi who stated this in an interview with Reporters in Abakaliki, said PDP is the only alternative for Nigeria in 2019. Nwebonyi lamented that Nigerians have suffered so much under the present administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari and called on him (Buhari) to adhere to the advise of Obasanjo and step aside for Nigeria to move forward. “I ally myself 90 percent with the position of the former president Chief Olusajun Obasanjo, wherein he advised President Buhari not to contest in 2019 because it is obvious that Buhari has done his best and when one has done his best, you don’t need to continue”. “It is clear that there is hunger in the land, there is insecurity and discrimination among others. Nigeria vs. Sudan: Injury Knocks out Sunday Faleye

Image
The Nation can report that Super Eagles forward Sunday Faleye has been ruled out of the ongoing African Nations Championship as doctor said the injury he sustained against Angola is “severe”. The Eagles sensational player in a post on Monday confirmed the severity of the injury stating that “I have been ruled out of the rest of the tournament because of my injury. The doctor said I will be out for a month,” Faleye said. This means the youngster who played the championship with CHAN Eagles to the quarterfinal stage will be out of Coach Salisu Yusuf line up for the semi-final match against Sudan on 31 January in Marrakech. You would recall that Faleye fell awkwardly on his arm, twisting it in the process as Nigeria chased an equalizer during the quarterfinal game which the Eagles came from behind to win 3-1 as it extended to the extra-time. Although he continued to play with a bandage strapped arm, but he was later subbed. Meanwhile ahead of the Wednesday Semi-final cracker with Suda

Fayose: God directed me to pick my deputy as successor

Image
Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose, at a PDP rally on Monday in Ado Ekiti, declared that God directed him to support his Deputy, Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, to succeed him. “Olusola never said he wanted to be deputy governor, but God instructed me to pick him. I said we will go together after our tenure, but God said I should allow him to stay; that what I said was my own opinion,” Fayoe told the huge crowd. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former minister of state for works, Dayo Adeyeye, a serving senator, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi, and Nigeria’s former envoy in Canada, Dare Bejide, had indicated interest in the PDP’s ticket for the July 14 governorship poll. The trio, along with a former Fayose aide and justice commissioner, Owoseeni Ajayi, had jointly rejected the adoption of Olusola as the PDP’s sole candidate and described the step as “pedestrian and undemocratic”. But Fayose, who spoke at the rally held at Okesa area, said that he was not rattled by the negative utterances hurl

Second term bid: Like Jonathan, like Buhari

Image
But for Tuesday’s virulent letter from former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to President Muhammadu Buhari, warning him not to contemplate seeking a re-election, 2019 would probably have been a smooth sail for Buhari. This is not the first time Obasanjo would write or criticise sitting Nigeria’s leaders, since he left office first as military Head of State in 1979 and later as a civilian president in 2007. He criticised Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who took over from him. He also criticised Buhari as military Head of State. Again, when the military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd), unleashed his Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) on Nigerians, Obasanjo was up in arms against him and his policies, urging IBB to give SAP a “human face.” When the late General Sani Abacha came on stage and was almost running Nigeria aground, Obasanjo was all out firing from all cylinders. Unlike IBB however, Abacha could not tolerate Obasanjo’s criticisms and it did not take long

Buhari’s choice as AU’s anti- corruption czar laughable – PDP

Image
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has mocked the choice of President Muhammed Buhari as anti-corruption champion by the African Union (AU), describing the choice as laughable, derisory and eminently qualified as Africa’s joke of the year. In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP said it was clear that leaders of the AU were not well briefed on happenings in Nigeria. The party said that unknown to the AU leaders, “heavy sleazes” are being perpetrated around the Buhari presidency, adding that the African leaders were misled by the Federal Government with its deceptive name-and-shame stunt in the anti- graft war. The party said it was embarrassing that the Presidency, in its desperation to launder its “irredeemably battered image,” would resort to exporting its deceptive proclivities to the international arena. It noted that the AU leaders would not have honoured President Buhari if they knew that what obtained in Nigeria was a direct

NAF kills Boko Haram fighters in Sambisa

Image
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said on Monday it used a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) to neutralize scores of Boko Haram terrorists in Sambisa general area. NAF added that the air strikes also led to destruction of artillery guns and gun trucks belonging to the terrorists. The NAF Director of Public Relation and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olatukunbo Adesanya, in a statement supported with video footage of the operation, said the use of the remotely piloted aircraft followed the deployment of an Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform confirming the presence of insurgents in the area. The statement reads: “A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), on 27 January 2018, successfully destroyed an artillery gun and some gun trucks belonging to the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) in the Sambisa Forest. “A NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform and the RPA had observed the terrorists withdrawing with the artillery gun and gun tr

National restructuring: APC “pathological liars”, says ADP

Image
The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has taken a swipe at the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the restructuring position recently made public by the El-Rufai Committee, describing it as a political gimmick designed to deceive Nigerians and to shift public attention from condemnations trailing the Buhari administration. In a statement released by the Director Media, Kayode Jacob, yesterday, in Abuja, ADP’s National Chairman, Engr. Yabagi Sani, said that APC might be taking Nigerians for granted in much the same way PDP did before it was swept from power in ‘Change’ election of 2015. According to him, the restructuring proposal by the APC is deceptive, going by the track record of the party. “They rode on the back of great promises in 2015 without clearly fulfilling any till date,” he said. “Now, again, as we enter election year they are coming up with what many of them strongly condemn and oppose” Sani argued that the restructuring report was cooked up by hired perso

FA Cup fourth round: Spurs survive, Hammers exit as Iheanacho, Ndidi score in Foxes’ big win

Image
Abuja – Harry Kane came to Tottenham Hotspur’s rescue after they were just minutes away from a stunning English FA Cup defeat away to lowly Newport County on Saturday. Fourth-tier Newport, one of several Welsh clubs who play in English domestic football, put themselves in sight of one of the all-time great upsets against eight-time FA Cup winners Tottenham. Iheanacho It was all thanks to Padraig Amond’s first-half goal. But eight minutes from time, in-form England striker Kane equalised. This was when, after Spurs had won a corner kick, he tapped in from close range following an excellent flick-on from South Korean Son Heung-Min. A 1-1 scoreline was how it finished as League Two Newport survived four minutes of injury-time to hold out for a lucrative replay at Wembley, Spurs’ temporary home. Newport, a massive 72 places behind a Spurs side who are fifth in the Premier League, sparked delirious scenes at Rodney Parade when Amond gave them a 38th-minute lead. Ben Tozer’s long throw int

Federer wins record 20 Grand Slam titles

Image
Roger Federer has won his sixth Australian Open Grand Slam title and his 20th overall, defeating sixth seed Marin Cilic in five thrilling sets. The Swiss maestro easily took the first set 6-2, but lost the second in tie break to the Croatian. Federer took the third set 6-3, only to fluff his 3-2 lead in the fourth set and watch helplessly, amid erratic display, as Cilic took the next four games 6-3. Roger Federer The defending champion however restored control in the fifth and deciding set, racing to a 4-1 lead, then he broke Cilic again to have a pivotal 5-1 lead to serve for the championship. Federer did not make any mistake this time as he served out the match, winning 6-1, becoming the oldest man, at 36, to win the championship in the Open era. The match was Federer’s 30th Grand Slam final. Victory gave him a sixth Melbourne crown to put him alongside Novak Djokovic and Roy Emerson in the all-time Australian Open leader list. He also became the first man to win 20 Gr

Super Eagles beat Angola, qualify for CHAN semi-final

Image
Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the semi final of the CHAN tournament in Morocco. CHAN Eagles After going behind in the 55th minute, the Eagles rallied to overpower the Angolan side 2-1 to extend their stay in Morocco. A defensive miscalculation helped Angola take the lead after what was supposed to be a clearance deflected off an Angolan player and bounced into an unguarded goal. Seeing that it was now or never, the Eagles threw everything they had at their opponent and got the breakthrough in the 91st- Anthony Okpotu brilliantly beating his marker to make it all square. Substitute Gabriel Okechukwu who had earlier missed a clear chance made up for it with a fine solo effort, dribbling past three defenders before putting the ball beyond the goalkeeper. Nigeria will now play Sudan in the semi-final.

Between OBJ and PMB: The dangers, the fear

Image
For two men whose ideas of Nigerian unity are poles apart, one vigorously into farming, and the other a herdsman with a ranch, Nigerians should watch it. Is Olusegun Obasanjo a strategic thinker or a hype-man? Is President Muhammadu Buhari a strong and effective person or an insensitive and ineffectual nepotic leader? These two issues stick to the core of recent developments in Nigeria regarding the President Buhari governance processes, outputs and outcomes, as well as last week’s scathing special press statement issued in typical character, by former President Obasanjo. However, between the hype-man and the alleged ineffectual leader, Nigerians need to know the workings of the mind of both men of power. Interestingly, both have age and authority on their sides and, therefore, a frontal, no-holds-barred revelation of the workings of the innermost recesses of these individuals cannot be openly engaged. Yet, this report will show that whereas Obasanjo spoke truth to power, his hi

President Olusegun Obasanjo and his love letter to Buhari by Fani-Kayode

Image
Few can dispute the fact that President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Ebora Owu, was one of those that brought President Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015. Without Obasanjo’s wholesale and comprehensive endorsement Buhari would have failed woefully at the polls three years ago. Yet, in my view, today the Ebora Owu has absolved himself of this grave and monumental error by standing up to speak truth to power at great risk to his safety, fortunes and welfare and by sending our President an explosive, damning and much-awaited missive telling him that he has failed woefully, admonishing him to get off his “high horse of leadership” and advising him not to attempt to run again in 2019. I am delighted and indeed proud of what the Ebora has done and I commend and congratulate him for finding the courage to say what those of us that have been at the forefront of the struggle against President Buhari have been saying for the last three years. My friend and brother Governor Peter ‘The Rock’ Ayodele F

Image
Traditional rulers from Ijaw speaking communities have rejected the idea of cattle colonies in any part of Ijawland. The monarchs expressed support for the ongoing clamour for restructuring of the country i

Cattle Colony: Before Buhari lures us into deadly trap

Image
To us here in Nigeria, a colony is nothing new. The colony of Lagos established by the British in 1861 has familiarised us to it. But our acquaintance with it goes much further back to the ancient colonies established in 7th century B. C by the Greeks on the Mediterranean coastline of Italy, France and Spain, of which Nice, Marseilles and Naples are notable examples; by the Phoenicians, notably Utica (Utique) in 1100 B.C. and Carthage in 813 B.C. (both in present-day Tunisia) and Tripoli in 900 B.C. in present-day Libya; down to the modern colonies founded by the English in the early 17th century AD in North America, – thirteen of them, the first of which, Virginia, was founded in 1607. The idea underlying a colony, both in antiquity and in modern times, is that of settlement: see British Settlements Act 1887. A colony is a place for the settlement of people “with common or similar language, interests or occupations, living together in close association”, like the farm settlements e
